ROVER 220 COUPE

Rover's version of a sport coupe, the 220 turbo was first released in 1992. The car was jointly designed with Honda due to a partnership between the two companies at the time. The styling was based on the Rover 200 (R8) but externally the only body panels shared were the wings and bonnet.
There was never a Honda version of the Coupe and as the Honda Concerto had different wings and bonnet, the Rover Coupe shares no external bodywork with that car with the exception of small items such as door handles.
The Coupe featured an unusual Targa top roof which had glass panels and a T-bar that could be removed and stowed in the boot creating an open-top feel. The Coupe also had frameless doors unlike standard Rover 200s.
The 220 turbo was built in Longbridge, where all other Rover 200s and European-spec Honda Concertos were built. It was fitted with a 2 litre turbo engine, and with a top speed of 150mph and a 0-60mph of 6.2 secs it was one of the fastest cars in its class.
Production of the Rover Coupe lasted beyond that of the standard R8 until 1999. By then the 2.0 litre engines had been dropped in favour of 1.8 VVC units and the 1.6 Honda engine had been replaced by a 1.6 K-Series Rover engine.
